Hello all...

Quick question on the UVMapper forum here....

I bought a KITT Model from Turbosquid, and made changes to have his wheels turned left, right, and may want more advanced options.

Only thing is, when I export the obj, no textures go along with him.

How Can I get that to happen with UV Mapper Pro, or basically, With UVMapper Pro, do you know what I would have to select to get KITTS .obj textures to show when I make the changes for wheels, doors, etc?  It's kinda an expensive model so I would appreciate this tip so I can use it in renders with more advanced looks to the car's body.

is it UVMAPPED? if so did you change the model itself with them changes.

If you changed the model did you make new uvmaps for it ?

did it come with textures.

Do you have path's to lead to the textures ..etc etc etc..

Btw ..did you read any manual or help file ?

I believe it is uv mapped.  There is a list of materials when I do open up the material picker.

So basically, you're saying I have to remake uvmaps for it when I move the parts around?

It did infact come with textures, I know that much, but basically for the interior of the car more than the exterior.  Otherwise, I beleive they are diffuse colors.

Car didn't really come with any manuals......sadly.

if you move polygons around from a OBJ you changed the OBJ file itself ..and then you need to make new UVMAPS for those part or the whole obj.

And if you load it into uvmapper you should see the maps themself, if it has uvmaps..

if it has just difuse colors it might not have uvmaps for them items..

uvmapper does have manuals or help files online..

Thanks ---

I didn't realize about the UVMapps.  It's just a white model in UVMapper, so I guess it doesn't have UVMapps.

I'll try the UVMapping thing, I have to sign off now, but will let you know how I make out.

Thanks for the suggestions.....I'll keep this forums posted. 😄

Just so you know, it does look diffused.

It's okay --- did a UVMap in a box format in UVMapper, exported a new UVModel, will be able to polish him up a bit with real paint rather than diffuse.

Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate them.

Welcome to the forum!  When you import a model that already has been mapped, you should see the maps in the texture viewport like in my example.

Thanks for the welcome!

Didn't see that.  Just saw a bunch of squiggly lines and a jumble.  Nothing like you have there.

I made a box map, and exported as a new obj.   Hoping that will work.  It should, right?

Gonna start polishing it up a bit now with a new paint job.

Thanks for that showing Dan, appreciate the explanation.

Can you post up a screenshot of what the box mapping looks like in UVMP?  I used to do a lot of muscle car mapping for one of the members here and most of the time just box mapping the whole car did not do a good job.

Also you want to use the color texture checker before saving your model to make sure that you will not have stretching issues.  Let us know if you do not know how to do that.

I most certainly will tonight.

I'm sorry I caan't right now, but I have to go to a doc's appointment (ugh).

I tried the box mapping, it bought back all the textures so it wasn't just a diffuse color, so I thank you very much for your assistance! 😄

I'll be putting a better scanner on him next, so we'll see how that looks too.  Put real Pontiac Rims on him as well.  Wish I didn't have to go for the appointment, but I will do that for you later this evening.

Just out of curiosity, what did you use instead of the box?

I pulled each piece off and mapped it separately using whatever mapping was appropriate .  Some pieces I had to cut apart by facets.  It was all very tedious.  I ended up with pages and pages of maps.  The interiors were the worst.

yeah Dan is right ther is NO one way to uvmap.. 9/10 times you need to take it bit by bit and map it the way that is best for that piece of the obj.

So using just the box tool wont work ..some peices need the cylinder tool  etc etc

Uvmapping is almost a full time job to do well ..

Now Dan,

If you don't mind my asking ---

How do you break it down like that?  I'll try and get that image of my textures showing what I did.......I hope I can again.

I just got home now at 9:23pm Eastern Time and will be up a while working on it.

I just find it sooooooo confusing when people make texture maps that way ---- what is it considered as the choices in UVMapper Pro?

Wow.....I can just imagine ---- but KITT will be worth it if I can get it done that way. If I can even get it done my easy way I had going this afternoon it will be worth it.  Time will tell, I'll have to see.

I'll post an image when I can though this evening..........😄

Update:  I don't think anything on the car was UVMapped because it didn't show that it was in Gmax.  I'm recompiling to an object file with wheels in a special turned left position for a scene that I want to do.

Will keep you all posted as to how everything works out in Poser when I try it out again.  Will probably be tomorrow, both process take about a few hours each.

It is late, but I will try to get something up for you tomorrow to show how I use the right click menu to access the various parts in an obj.

Thanks Dan --- I haven't forgotten either to show you how my mapping works.

I recompiled KITT last night, and remapped him, so hopefully it should work.

I'll post a screen shot here if it does of him when GRAB finishes for Gmax.

Something went wrong with the compile last night on my old computer, would have been a 24 hour plus compile but with my new one today, a mere 5 hours.  Grab can take just as long which I hope not, but at least being stuck in bed with the headaches today makes it less painful to not be able to do anything with my new PC.......

Appreciate all your help! 😄

Well, after frustration after frustration trying to get KITT's Textures to show, once I learn remapping successfully I'm sure I'll be able to do it, I've decided to download the Demo of 3DS Max.....

Do all the poses I need of him in there, and then I'm all set.....

I appreciate you showing me how to get those individual parts UVDan --- I still could use that. 😄

Can you send me your model to uvdan@renderosity.com so I can load it into UVMP and take some screen shots for you?

Ragtopjohnny posted Wed, 08 August 2012 at 10:08 PM

Well, it's not "my" model.  I bought it off of Turbosquid.  Are we able to do that with those?  I'd be more than happy to if we are able to do that.

I'm just not sure on the licensing.  However, upon inspection of the model with Max tonight, it looked like it had no UVMapping, don't ask me how he did it, but I noticed psd layers in there for textures.

This is the model now in Poser:

I'm glad I got it going, but if I canwith out any licensing laws being violated, I'll be glad to send you the model for UVMapping, but it is a static model at the moment and I'll be trying to make the doors be able to be opened and closed in Poser if I can.

That however, means more work on my end again recompiling, so I probably won't  (I'm lazy that way,)

Signing off for the night shortly, have a good one, and I thank you for your assistance......

I will use a generic car model instead for your video tutorial.  I will start on it later tonight and should be done by tomorrow night and have it posted on my youtube channel.  I will return then with the link.

I don't know if this pertains to the newer Poser versions or not but it used to be that you had to have the Ambient & Specular set to black in order to get textures to show up.
