Hi, everyone. I've uploaded two chairs I had created to shareCG.com, and some other places. They are free for all to use, modify, or render in your scenes as desired. No restrictions, except you can't sell them, even if you modify or change them. Maybe to give credit back to me if you do use them. Otherwise, have fun. The zip file contains both models in .obj format, as well as a .max scene file (2012 and higher), and a Daz|Studio scene file of the chairs (D|S 4.0 or higher).

I modeled these last year in 3dsmax 2012 as part of a project for my 3D design class. It's not my very best work, but I think they came out well. Check out the README included in the zip file for more info. The max file does not have the modifier stack intact. I collapsed that to prevent any possible issues with scene compatibility, since I did use a free plugin modifier for creation of one of the chairs.

You can download the ZIP file from shareCG.com here:
Contemporary Modern Chairs

I will be uploading these to other sites as well, including the FreeStuff here on Renderosity, in case you don't like ShareCG for some reason.  However, I don't know how long it takes for Rosity to approve their freestuff.

Enjoy, and feel free to contact me if you have any issues.

No prob, Jeff.  If you happen to try them out, let me know how they work out for you.  Being this is the first time I'm sharing models with the community, I'm still a bit green on how best to export the OBJ files, which depends heavily on scale and settings.  I tried my best to make it as universal as possible.  I prob should have left the modifier stack intact for the .max version, but I felt that could cause compatibility issues with one of the chairs, since I used a custom modifier for part of it that some folks may not have installed.

It's very hard to scale models for Poser since Poser models are on a very tiny scale, so most imported models come into Poser gigantic.

A couple of problems:  I can't get Daz studio to load the daz file (it gives an error message that says one or more files could not be found, then another error message that says "an error occurred while reading the file" then it loads a blank scene. (I'm using Daz Studio 4 Pro).

Also, when I load the obj files in Bryce it asks for the .mtl files, which aren't in the zip (but when I click "ok" it loads the models with no problem and work great).

I don't currently have Poser so I can't try them in that. I have a copy of Poser 8 ordered and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail, and when it gets here I'll try importing the models into that.

Great info.  Not sure why the Daz files won't load.  Yeah, I did not include the material definitions with the objects because I was using procedural materials anyway.  Aside from the nag screen to locate the mtl file, it shouldn't cause any probs with using the OBJ.  I'll try to find out why the Daz file format won't load.  I posted in the daz studio forum too, so maybe i'll follow up there.

About Poser... I don't have Poser, and really don't know how it handles files.  However, the export ratio from Centimeter units in Max to Poser units is 0.04, according to the Max preset obj exporter.  So if Poser users want to use the OBJ, it should load in Poser just fine.  I exported the obj at a scale of 0.04 anyway, for use in Octane.  So the objects should load fine in Poser (maybe even larger than one would like).

Thanks, Jeff.

Oh wow.  That's excellent, Jeff.  Thanks.

Is that the ottoman in the middle?  Looks cool!

Thanks for using the chairs, and letting me know the results.

Cool!  So you were able to open the .pz3 file I provided in Poser 8?  Because I had someone save that for me (I don't own Poser), but they did it from Poser 2012 I think.  Although, I've heard that Poser scene files can be backwards compatilble, as long as no newer modules were used to create it?

Were you able to try the .max scene file for the Ottoman?  I saved it with a simple light rig, and standard material setup, but as with the chairs it's only compatible with Max 2012 or higher.  I'm thinking I may provide a MentalRay material and light rig scene file for future freebies.

It loads in Max 2013 without any problems.

Yeah, Poser files are backwards compatible. When I load it, I get a message that says it was saved in a later version of Poser, but it still loads.
