Subject: Modeling a spidronized icosahedron? Mathematical modeling problem.

Is anyone here familiar with Spidron?  Has anyone had success modeling a spidronized archimedean solid of any variety?  I'd like to do it in 3dsmax, but I am stuck on how to proceed topologically.  Edge turning and typical subdivision re-meshing operations on a icosahedron primitive isn't really giving the correct results.  I see information regarding this out there, but it's only for "specialized" software that is programmed specifically to do the spidron tessellations, and then only in "virtual space", with no way to output the results to .obj or such.

Any help on how to subdivide, or cut the manifold, etc. would be appreciated.

I say that to say this, do you have links to pages illustrating the geometric solid and its mathematical representation?

Is this for Poser?  I don't have Poser, but can I still download and use this?  It looks interesting.  I'm currently using this plugin for 3dsmax to explore some parametric and minimal mathematical surfaces:

Mathsurf 2

However, i don't have a formula for Spidron tessellation of a polyhedron.

Nice!  Yep, that first website shows exactly what I'm trying to do, but there's no documentation or tuition on how to attack it from a modeling standpoint, using subdivision modeling techniques.  At least not that I read.  Perhaps I missed it.  I got close a few times just by messing around with edges on a icosahedron primitive, but that's about it.  I need this to be modeled as a solid, or i would simply use a 2D tessellation, and subpolygon displacement to give a quick result.

Well, I got this sorted with the help of some formula in Mathsurf 2 for 3dsmax.  PhilC: Let me know if you ever decide to release your cool looking plugin for Poser as a standalone product, or a plugin for other apps.  If it could output to OBJ or some other useful file format, I'd be happy to take it for a run.  Thanks.

Phil C, many thanks!

Your create prop script is a very good creative tool

I have tried it (using custom numbers) with projected picture as materials on the prop and anime it

I like it very much and have fun with it  I must try now how to anticipe and preview the result

I just meet one problem using it with Poser pro 2012 .When i have used it after  calling the script  its working good .But if i close the window of the script i cannot call the script again for open the script window except if i quit Poser ,reload Poser and open the script again

Yes you'll need to restart Poser.
