Subject: How to do straight-up refraction, such as clear glass in Poser Pro 2012

Has something changed? I set up a simple refraction and didn't get what I expected. What exactly do I have to attach with a refraction to make it look right now?

maybe the sr2.1 changed something?

Nothing has changed. Since you didn't say what you did get I'm forced to guess common mistakes.

  1. Ray tracing enabled?

  2. At least two bounces to see through a solid object (front and back)?

  3. Something to see behind it?

Yeah, all those BB ;). I found and used a gem shader you posted and put everything where it's supposed to be, but I get a nice gray color rather than the color I put in. I should mention I'm using emitters to light the scene too, so perhaps it just doesn't work in that instance.

Shader looks right. That's a very dark purple for Inner_Color - remember that looking through two layers means what's on the other side is multiplied with that color twice. And if you have GC on, that's anti-gamma corrected to a very small number.

Instead, try light pastel colors such as RGB 240, 200, 240.

Then work your way darker from there.

Ok, BB will give it a try. Thanks :)

Another point - Poser does refraction outside to inside in the correct direction, but it uses that again for the inside to outside and that's wrong.

What ends up happening is you get a huge amount of bending in certain situations that just should not be there.

You have to drop the Refract node's Index_of_Refraction closer to 1 to compensate. In a thin glass situation, you want 1.01 to 1.05 instead of the true 1.5 to 1.7.

That's with the refraction node IOR at 1.00. The small bead has a hole down thru the center and that's why it looks darker - as it should :).
