“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.”

- President John F. Kennedy

Let us help other people to overcome their fear of being wrong because that is the greatest obstacle to anything.

A millennium ago if you had told people that one day hundreds of people will be flying around in metal ships circling the Earth; you might have been burned at the stake for witchcraft.  Arthur C. Clarke stated that, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

In my lifetime alone so far we’ve gone from computers that run on punch cards and fill entire rooms to a phone/camera, video display, music player that fits in your pocket that can wirelessly communicate around the world.  In short, advancements in scientific understanding have transformed our world, our way of living and the way we should be doing things but still people live in fear of new capabilities.

H.P. Lovecraft says, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”   In all of recorded human history, mankind has never known world peace because they have been afraid.   People of different beliefs may all hate each other out of fear of living in peace with another person’s ideas that may not agree with their own, they fear tolerance.  Tolerance is giving the same right that you claim for yourself to other people, the right to believe what you want and be yourself without being forced to accept another person’s belief as your own.

Can you imagine people using reason and saying, “You might be right, I don’t know.”?  Afraid that we don’t know all the answers, we most look only to confirm the ones we have all come to believe as individuals but as former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson once said, “It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

It doesn’t matter what you believe, we can all work together and that’s demonstrated every day.  It doesn’t matter what country you’re from, what religion or lack of you practice, it is solely a matter of what you choose to focus your attention on.   Do you look for what we have in common?  After all, we all breathe the same air; we are all mortal and share our Earth at this moment in history.  Everybody wants a place to raise their children in safety and that is only possible by living in peace.  That is the legacy we should be giving our children… not our fears and debt.

I believe that world peace will happen within our lifetimes but then again… I’m not afraid to be wrong.  Are you?

Take care and be blessed.
