June 2012 Artist of the Month - SeanE

Jun 02, 2012 at 12:43 am by Store Staff

image_23561_1.jpgEach month the Renderosity community votes on the Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... June's AOM is SeanE!

We congratulate SeanE for an outstanding collection of works in the Digital Comics Gallery!

Who is 'SeanE'?

High school teacher, comic colour-guy, husband, father, grandfather, winner of the June 2012 AOM on Renderosity… no one special in other words. :+P

How long have you been working in digital art?

I coloured my first comic lineart in 2001 (drawn by fellow rendo' artist penguin-commando) so I could use it on some Christmas cards. After finishing it – it took me 6 hours because all I had was a copy of Photoshop 4 at the time which I had no idea how to use – I thought, "That was fun, not to mention cheap (as a potential hobby)" so I went looking for some more lineart pictures to colour. You can see my progression in my gallery by going to my very last page and clicking backwards because I've not deleted a single picture in all those years. You can see how bad I was at it back then…! Hopefully I've gotten better since then…

What are you currently working on?

I've most recently been working on some of Randy Kintz' (Rantz on deviantart.com) sketches for his "Fantazies" book. I've also just coloured up Danny Miki's tablecloth/banner for his table at the 2012 San Diego Comic Con and now he wants me to do his back-banner as well, just as soon as he finishes drawing it.

What is in your digital toolset and why?

Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8 circa 2003) – Mainly because I can't afford to upgrade and simply prefer this version, having had a go with newer releases and haven't seen the need to change. I also colour with a mouse, not a tablet, which shocks a lot of people in the comic industry. I'm just quicker with the mouse.

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

Probably this: "Una – Witchblade," which I coloured for fun and not money. I just had an immense feeling of satisfaction with the colours, lighting and overall depth of the picture. Pencils are by Marc Silvestri and inks by Victor Moya.

Who, or what, inspires you?

Other colourists – especially Steve Firchow, "Blondthecolorist", and Nei Ruffino, amongst dozens of others.

What is your work process like? How is your experience collaborating with others?

Slow, because I can only colour after the day job of teaching at my school and on weekends. Collaborations with others are always individual experiences. Some go well, others not so much.

Do you have any tips you would be willing to share with others on the kind of work you do?

Not especially, except for aspiring colourists you need to get your hands on high resolution scans to practice on. It's so much easier. You can get some on my website – www.seanellery.com

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Well, truth be told, the digital comics section has changed a lot since I started posting on it. I'm about the only one left who posts the drawn/coloured art like mine. Everyone else is making their comics with assorted 3D software. So, now I guess I'm the odd one out on that gallery.

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
