In Memory of Tim Hildebrandt

At a time when Renderosity has experienced the loss of so many of our beloved artists and friends, it is with sad and heavy hearts that we also mourn the loss of legendary artist Tim Hildebrandt. If you would like to post your condolences we encourage you to do so and we will make certain that they are sent along to the Hildebrandt family.

June 11, 2006

Tim Hildebrandt has passed away. And, with him, so has an era.

Tim, 67, died today from complications due to diabetes. He is survived by his mother Germaine, twin brother Greg, sister Janie, wife Rita, son Charles, nieces Mary and Laura, and nephew Gregory.

Tim was an otherworldly artist. For 47 years, his captivating work fostered the dreams and fantasies of millions of fans, young and old.

Best known as part of the Brothers Hildebrandt team, Tim's career transported him to-and through-many worlds. Technically speaking, Tim and Greg worked side by side. But their work together on such masterpieces as the original Star Wars poster and 70's J.R.R. Tolkien calendars proved that their individual talents could coalesce seamlessly into one.

Tim was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. While he loved and appreciated all forms of art, he had a particular passion for animation and illustration.

While he will be greatly missed by all of us who love him, we take comfort knowing that he will live on in the art that he created.

"My brother is in my hands, my eyes, my mind, my soul and my art.
He always has been from birth. And he will continue to be."
- Greg Hildebrandt

Our world is a more beautiful place thanks to people like Tim Hildebrandt. Tim's life made a positive difference in the lives of so many, myself included.
May the family take some small comfort in the fact that Tim was truly an inspiration.

I was shocked and saddened to see this article. I've long been an admirer of the fantasy art created by both the Hildebrandt brothers. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, it is the end of a marvelous collaboration but hopefully we haven't seen the last of the gift they were both given.

I had the honor of meeting and chatting with Mr. Hildebrandt a few years back, and I've always remembered his cheerful, open attitude and his great enthusiasm for his work. It saddens me that the world must go on without him. He will truly be missed.

Their art was brought to me by Star Wars and has amazed me ever since. Now we can hope that Tim's view of heaven will guide Greg's talents and show us all, what we have to look forward to. May God bless and keep the Hildebrandt family surrounded by love. Namaste

I share with a heavy heart the loss of a great person and friend and one of the most inspirational artist I have come to know greatly. Tim always Challenged himself and pushed passed his limits. He had many ideas of what success ment to him and never let that success change the type of person he made of himself. My prayers are with the Hildebrandt Family and know that Tim will always be with them and with all artists as each have a special connection with this artist .

Any loss is a great loss but someone who has shared so much of our own visions and dreams hurts all the more.
Respects to all his family at the sad loss.

Oh, very sad. I remember the Tolkien images very well and was impressed when first viewing them. If i recall it right, the brothers did some artwork with the Amiga computer and DPaint long time ago too.

You were one of my greatest inspirations.

The Tolkein art is what I know the best, and will miss seeing new items that bring such lush and vivid from our minds to the image. How did he see inside our heads to know what to put down. You will be missed.

By: shonsu on 7/5/06
Tim Hildebrandt and his brother Greg created so many inspiriing fanstastical pictures. The images portrayed many emotions and turned even the most horrifying character into something human. Tim will be missed.

By: jwiest on 7/5/06
What a tremendous loss the art world feels with Tim's passing. Condolences to his friends and most especially his family who feel the pain much worse than those of us who simply enjoyed his art work.

By: Shayder on 7/6/06
The Hildebrandt Brothers were the first artists I ever became aware of as a child.

They were the first ones that taught me great art did not just exist but had to be created. I actively sought out other creations from them which was not easy at the time, 13 years old living in the middle of the Canadian prairies in a town of 450 people.

They transported me away to many different worlds on countless adventures and are, in part, responsible for my career.

I will forever cherish the times I spent with Tim and Greg through their art and because of Tim's art he will live forever.

My sincere condolences to the Hildebrandt family.

Tim was something of an inspiration to me in the realms of art. His work, along with that of Rodney Matthews, convinced me that art could be enjoyable, awe inspiring and fascinating.

thanks Tim. You'll be sorely missed.

The richness of their style and their use of colour and shape left me awestruck as a young man indeed that feeling remains today.I can't stress how important I feel these brilliant two brothers have been to the history of American art.I have no doubt that their works have and will yet inspire generations of artists and art lovers. While my tastes in art have always been broad.Dozens of Illustrators from the 18th,19th and 20th century have been especially inspiring. But these two were mindbendingly great to me.Greg while I'm sure you had your differences on life you and Tim were very lucky guys to have shared such a mutal passion and talent and us the luckier to witness your minds' eye! *Dream Two* Cherish the thought...dont stop the dream. To you and his family I'm sorry for your loss.

By: Toribev on 7/7/06
Tim was a wonderful artist who gave beauty and inspriation to so many. His art will live on and continue to give enjoyment to many generations to come.

My deepest and sincere condolences to his family.

I never saw his face before I found this bad news at Renderosity.
But his art is in my mind and will ever be. We are unlasting - at the most only one link of a spiritual chain - and by doing this we can participate in eternity. Tim did so.

Tim was one of my teachers at the Joe Kubert School. He taught us many lighting tricks to use in images, to make them really pop. I'm gonna miss the guy.
