av85947.jpgEach month the Renderosity community votes on the Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... December's AOM is Poisen!

We congratulate Poisen for an outstanding collection of works in the ZBrush Gallery!

Who is 'Poisen' ?

My real name is Jon Bennett, and I am currently living in the technological desert of SW Michigan.

How long have you been working in digital art?

Pretty much since the start of things digital - think vic 20 commodore 64 days and Dpaint.

Do you have any traditional art experience?

Nope, pretty much self-taught.

What are you currently working on?

Just trying to keep the wheels from flying off this thing called my life! ;)

What software is in your digital toolset and why?

Well, I have experience with all of the major platforms in some form or another, but have narrowed down my focus to an older copy of 3ds Max and the current version of ZBrush.

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

Hmm... hard question. I would say it is one that I havent done yet. I suffer from being my own worst critic when it comes to my finished work and always feel that there is more and/or better things that I should/could have done or done a different way and the next one will always be better.

Who, or what, inspires you?

Another hard one... The "what"- just about anything and anything really can and does provide me with inspiration from time to time. The "who" - well alot of the old masters of course, Boris, Franzetta, Giger, and alot of the old comic book artists are always good for a little inspiration.

What do you enjoy most about ZBrush?

The open ended nature of it and the way that all of the toolset combines with each other to provide an almost endless way of doing things. There really is no right or wrong way to do things in the Brush, just many different paths to your wanted destination. You just have to choose which one is right for the task at hand. Total creative freedom, really!

Do you have any tips you would be willing to share on the software?

Sure. I hear a lot of people have problems with the interface, and I can relate to that as far as it being alot different than most software applications. The trick is being able to stick with it and find the methods to it and the keyboard shortcuts. After you get that down and start to feel comfortable with it, it is really amazing on how fast the workflow can go. That and try not to take it in all at once, try to work on one aspect/function of it at a time until comfortable. Just looking at it as a whole can be rather intimidating to begin with. Like most things, we all want to start off at a dead run, but you really do need to learn to crawl and then walk before you learn to run with it.

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

It has really been great! I have been here in some shape or form for about 10 years now. As a place to learn about things and get inspiration and feedback, the different forums and the people here have really been a key factor in both my initial learning and then helping to keep on improving on my skillset and abilities. Long story short, I love the place!

Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?

Really, just keep at it. Whatever it is you like or want to do, dont ever give up. It is a long road and it really has no final destination, but the journey itself is one heck of a ride for those who stick with it!

Also, I would really like to thank all of you guys and gals at Rendo for the nomination. It is very much appreciated!

We invite you to have a further look at Poisen's Renderosity Gallery!

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
