All About... Simon Schild [Simon-3D]

May 08, 2014 at 12:00 am by Store Staff

Out in the real world, we all have hobbies and interests in addition to the work we may be most known for. Here at Renderosity, our vendors have their own stories to tell. Things they do away from their products... special projects, awards, citations, or things of interest that most may not know about.

In an effort to better introduce our vendors to the rest of the community, we've asked them to tell us more about themselves, and share their stories. Rather than a straightforward interview, these are their stories, in their own words.

This week, we find out all about artist and vendor, Simon Schild, better known to the community as Simon-3D.

Even as a young boy, I was interested in making things from discarded bits of wood and whatever I could lay my hands on from my father’s workshop. My school buddies knew where to come if they wanted toy guns, bows and arrows or a BMX ramp, although back then they were Chopper bikes or things we cobbled together.

As an adult, my first job was a chef (a family tradition, my father being a Master Craftsman), but I soon gravitated towards the more creative, presentation side of things - cake decorating, dressing salmon, sugar pulling and so forth. Restricting my creative talents to food wasn’t enough, and I spent a long time searching for my calling – for 30 years, I jumped from trade to trade, trying everything from fabrication welding, house building, baking and technical authoring. As technology progressed, I started refining the search, dabbling in web design, desktop publishing and computer illustration, until I eventually found what I was looking for when I discovered 3D design. The search was over – I had found my niche.

And I’ve been in it for the last 10 or 11 years. Besides the Poser, Daz and Bryce content, I have a few customers that come to me for bespoke models (examples being the design and modelling of animal cages for a lab, exhibition stands and short animations for presentations). I also do the odd commissioned job that just appears in my inbox from time to time. These are often great fun - some good examples are the 1960's *Batgirl Bike*and the *Spindrift* from ‘Land of the Giants,’ commissioned by fans of the shows.

I sometimes work with author Steve Roach, providing illustrations for his childrens books. To date, we’ve collaborated on two books (‘Crackly Bones’ and ‘The Terrorer’), both of which can be found on Amazon and Smashwords. It’s an enjoyable hobby for me, requiring a slightly different skillset – each illustration is typically built as a 3D scene and then rendered down and mixed with photographs and 2D pictures to create the final illustration.

Along with all of this, I enjoy spending time with my 6 grandchildren. Ranging from 2yo to 17yo, it feels like going full circle back to my youth, making stuff for them to play with and sitting quietly to draw and paint things. When I can find any leftover time, I also play guitar – well, I make some sort of *noise* with the thing anyway – and devour books and films of a sci-fi nature (you might have guessed by my models).

All I need now are a couple of clones and 36 hour days!

I hope you enjoy my creations as much as I enjoy making them.
