Who is 'meipe' and how did you come by that username?

I'm a professional sculptor in Italy and 3D meshes to me are another form waiting to be sculpted, just like a surface such as marble or wood can be in real life... But, the digital world is an escape from the 'hard' physical one, and I love doing things that are not possible in the real world. In a book by Alain Fournier, a little girl, when angry, used to tell to her parents: 'As it is like that, I rather go to Meipe.' Meipe was the name of the world in her imagination.

How did you get into content creation in the first place? What made you decide to become a vendor?

I carve sculptures from the dimensions of a small lizard to things of monumental size in every material I can get my hands on: bronze, marble, terracotta, plaster and wood, mostly. I fancy to sculpt both abstract and figurative subjects like animals, plants and human bodies.

Well, as most sculptors in my country, I benefit from all the models and patterns from the past that are preserved in the many museums, palaces and churches. But, we need to always have references at hand, and we do not always have the right photograph in the archive, or a real model in front of us. I discovered Poser with its endless amount of amazing content, and the rest is history.

Have you had any traditional art experience or training?

I studied to become an architect, specializing in historical building restoration. I also worked for years in the studio of a famous sculptor.

I worked for a decade with the sculptor Tito Amodei: we realized many monumental sculptures and mosaics. For my work, I'm inspired by everything about living world, from plants to human beings, as all of them were dreaming to be transposed in a kind of Eden, which I mean to be the mirror of their soul. In this vision, I like to involve the spectator, and let him imagine part of it. That's why many of my artworks are fragments, as putting three dots at the end of a sentence...

What are you currently working on?

I'm working to fix all of Victoria's problems, sculpting her to perfection. But not only her problems, also new features as well, like moving each toe in our recent "Perfect Toes," which was impossible before. After that and V4 is perfected like a beautiful statue, we'll see what new things I'll come up with. :)

What software is currently in your digital toolset and why?

Poser, Blender, and ZBrush... all of which I use for 3D modeling. But also, a lot of my work is done text editing cr2 and pz2 files with Notepad++, taking all of the morphs and connecting them, blending them so they work automatically together. It's harder than you may think, Poser is very stubborn, and then DAZ is a whole other story!

How would you describe your creative process?

  • Planning. Outlining exactly what must be done, the product, its standard, the general workflow and its timing.
  • Research, detailed planning of the needed tools.
  • For the automated fixers, building of the ERC/ARC skeleton of the fixer (inner workings of the fix). Refined like a swiss clock, the more complex it is behind the scenes, the less customers will have to worry about it. One for Daz Studio, one for Poser.
  • Sculpting of all the morphs with photographic and real references (some products contain more than one hundred morphs!) The easier ones are sculpted with Poser's morphs tools, otherwise they are sculpted in Blender. I commonly use modeling tools of my own creation both in Poser and in Blender.
  • Polishing, testing widely, creation of useful extra morphs we think people will enjoy.
  • Packaging, promotion, customer support, etc. Thank you Xameva for doing it so well!

You've worked with Xameva here at Renderosity. Can you give us some insight on how the collaboration process works?

We communicate almost daily and share our ideas and keep track of our progress. We tackle parts of the project, using each of our strengths on the different parts. We also help motivate each other, especially on the long days where you feel like a zombie.

Can you list some of your personal favorites from your store and tell us a bit about their creation?

From my store, I fancy the automatic "Perfect" fixers... I was always frustrated with the way V4 looked in many poses, and I like things to look the best they can! My favourite product is "Perfect Toes." A nightmare to build, as V4's toe mesh is so delicate and was really hard to morph. But, it was worth it.. it's real fun to use, something V4 has needed for a long time.

How has your experience been as a Vendor and do you have any advice for other aspiring Digital Content Developers?

My experience as a vendor so far has been amazing. It's great to be among such a great community of artists. I love when I read a positive customer review on a product, it urges me to make more. So exiting and stimulating when my products become popular.

I don't know what advice to give since my experience is still limited, my store only a small collection of items. But, I think new developers should focus to create high-quality products, taking their time on promo images and also - don't forget small things, like the quality of the Poser thumbnail images. Go for quality and not quantity, people will notice.

How has this online Community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

First of all, I feel at home here at Renderosity...  I learned so much from the forums, from the work of the greatest developers, and from the feedback of customers. I'm amazed by the other vendors here, and hope one day I can have a large library full of the highest quality of products, like so many other vendors here.

Do you have any final words or advice for other digital artists/vendors?

2012 for me is going to be a big year. I hope to have at least 2 new products every month, and push the boundaries of what is possible. I hope you come along for the ride.
