Who is 'Badsue' ?
I'm living in Germany, in the northern tip of a region called
"Sauerland." Been married for 35 years now, me and my
husband have 2 sons and are self-employed. Doesn't leave me much
time for hobbies, unfortunately, so I can't do as much in digital
art as I'd like to.
How long have you been working in digital art?
I've always been interested in painting and drawing since I was a kid, so I took my first steps in digital art as soon as I had my first PC, back in the 90's.
Do you have any traditional art experience?
In my younger years, I've been very much into pencil drawing and later watercolor painting.
What are you currently working on?
Most of the time I'm creating fractals because it's the fastest compared to other programs I've been using, and of course it's fun. I have to make compromises regarding creating time (and render time) because my life doesn't leave me much spare time.
Who, or what, inspires you?
Who - other 3d artists of course, wherever I find their artwork. And what - well, nature, music and books. I love reading fantasy and historical novels, as well as science fiction.
What Fractal programs have you used, and what is your particular favorite to work in?
I've started with Mandelbulber but I never really got it. Therefore, I switched to Mandelbulb3D, which I found much easier to handle and is still my favourite fractal program. I've also worked with Fractal Explorer, Incendia, Apophysis 7x and JWildfire.
What is your fascination with fractal art?
It's fast, surprising and fun.
Fast it is compared to other 3D programs because you can create something interesting in an hour or even less. It doesn't take several days to work on one image, like in Bryce or even Terragen 2, which was a horror for me regarding the time it consumes. I'd love working with Terragen 2 again, but fear this will have to wait until I'll be retired. ;)
Fractals are surprising because you'll never know what the final result will be. I mean, one can't really plan something, at least I don't. I just start messing around, change formulas and settings and just see what comes out of it. Changing angles, point of view, coloring and lighting will do the rest. Somewhere during all that fiddling, I'm usually getting the idea of what it should be in the end.
And fun it is indeed! When I saw the first fractals a long time ago, I thought it's all about creating some sort of patterns. But it's much more than this of course! With Apophysis and JWildfire i.e., one can combine various flames (results) in Photoshop later by using them as layers and create a completely new image, even a complex landscape. In Mandelbulb3D one can use photos, textures or any other images as backgrounds, which can integrate the fractal into a landscape as well. Something I personally love very much.
What do you think your best piece of work is and why?
Hmm...my faves use to change while time goes by.
Apophysis: Spreewald
I like the combination of plants, atmo and water here. It was fun to put this landscape together by combining several layers in Photoshop.
Incendia: New Babylon
I'm a fan of dark, mystical places.
MB3D: Dunno, I like many. Maybe Hidden Life
Love the contrast between the vibrant colors of these fractal shrooms and the grey, misty background.
Well - as I said, I'm a fan of fantasy and this represents it perfectly for me.
Do you have any tips you would be willing to share on the software you use?
I don't have anything special in mind here - if anyone has a special question, just feel free to ask and I'll try to help if I can.
How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?
It's always an inspiration to see the artwork of all these wonderful artists here on Renderosity. As for learning - if there wouldn't be a few of wonderful people who kindly provide their parameters along with their images for others to learn from, escpecially the MB3D users, it would be much harder for any newbie to succeed in fractal arts. I, personally, can only say a big THANK YOU to everone who did and still does, and to all who helped me when I had problems (just to name a few: Len, Karel, Mies, Peter, Jim - can't list them all), you're great!
Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?
Never give up when you're experiencing problems! Just ask other Rendo artists, you'll surely find help! And when your muse seems to be on vacation, just switch to another program for a change, this usually works wonders!
